My Blog

It's really kind of funny actually…

I don’t pretend to be a great writer, but hey I can make great lists! This past year has been a significant one for emerging indie bands and I thought I would give a nod to them, the great shows they put on, and how happy they made me during these moments. I may sway in and out of the genre so don’t hold it against me!

FOSTER THE PEOPLE: Amazing band! Great unique new sound, I hear they were in advertising before the music biz, it probably didn’t hurt them! Seriously crushing on Mark Foster. Saw them twice last year, Lollapalooza (Sabrena & I on the hill…) & Scottsdale’s The Venue. Will I catch them at Comerica this year? I hope so! I found the sweetest redux album of theirs and will say I’m thoroughly impressed. Follow them @fosterthepeople.

THE NAKED & FAMOUS: This apparently Aussie band has some pretty great hits too. Saw them twice as well! Lollapalooza 2011 (Another Sabrena & Marta escapade) and then caught them again at the fabulous Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix! Probably my best times this year have been singing along to “Punching in a Dream” with my dearest co-worker @TheEricaPalmer aka TNAF addict as we fix the daily office emergencies. Music chills us out. Also twitterers: @TNAF

WHITE RABBITS: So this is going to be on my 2012 discovery list. I actually have NOT seen this band but am totally looking forward to it. Thanks iTunes for my free White Rabbits download which is going to catapult me back to the Crescent Ballroom with EP to check out this cool indie band. (At least I think so…) I am not following them yet on Twitter.

THE BLACK KEYS: This might be my ‘sway’ band, I would really cross them between Indie & Blues so don’t hate me. I love them. Haven’t seen this band either! I am hoping to catch them somewhere this year since their new album just dropped. Favs: ‘Tighten Up‘ & ‘Everlasting Light‘. The latter may have to be up there with top songs of all time, It’s gonna be one of those “this is our song” songs someday, I just know it. So the Carney’s are a hit for me!

M83: OK, another one I missed at The Crescent Ballroom, and another one that is in my out-of-bounds category but I still love it. Check “Midnight City” off their album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Someone find me a show in North America this year? I will try to make it.

STRFKR: Don’t take offense to the name… Saw these guys in the smallest possible venue of all time, downtown Phoenix – Trunk Space. That was an experience! They do not serve any alcohol, only coffee and teas, so when my friend and I bopped next door to the little bar we couldn’t resist picking up a six pack of PBR (not my fav – bleh). The show was great and I got tix to the new show this year for Christmas! (courtesy EP again) Too bad she planned her b-day on the same day and I was obligated to that! – still love ya chica. Next year. Check out Reptilians.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB: I’ve been following these guys for some time now, saw them at Lollapalooza and now they are just holding out till they make it to Phoenix! I am anticipating it! They are a bit more electronic than solely indie but I give them props. Their cute little redheaded front man cracks me up. Check out “Something Good Can Work” It is guaranteed to put you in a good mood. @TDCinemaClub

There are others who will make my honorary mention list:

- The Chain Gang of 1974
- Local Natives
- Arctic Monkeys
- The National
- Arctic Monkeys
- Vampire Weekend
- Arcade Fire (should really be up top… 5 stars) Long time NEED TO SEE BAND.

Anyway, if I haven’t bored you yet, go check out some of these amazing bands! Bringing unique music to the universe in a really empowering way. Being the music junkie that I am, I get a thrill from seeing these types of artists live. I hope I can get to at least one festival this year!

Music is the voice of the soul.

(Saw that in a fortune cookie once. I kind of take to the statement.) Happy Listening :)

Just wanted to share the song that will start my New Year off right… In love, in life, in music.

My magical musical crush: Paul McCartney.

I’m just gonna say it… I killed it with the Christmas Eve dessert this year. Normally, we make our shitty little boxed chocolate pies with prepackaged graham cracker crust, but this year I said NO MORE. It’s sort of all thanks to my ‘new’ so to speak, more like replacement iPad. (Long story, not gonna go there…) The best app so far, Flipboard!! Just flipping through, some real deliciousness caught my eye. I won’t take credit for the photos – I was too worried about making the dessert perfect, no time for pics – but check this amazingness out:

So, if you are looking for a holiday dessert that will really blow your guests/family/friends away, try this one out. It was pretty easy to whip up and the flavors were outrageously delicious! Props to Smitten Kitchen for sharing this little treasure with me. Many thanks!

Pear, Cranberry and Gingersnap Crumble
Adapted from Sweet Melissa Patisserie

Crumble
1 cup (125 grams) all-purpose flour
1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
3 tablespoons (37 grams) packed dark or light brown sugar
1 cup gingersnap crumbs (4 ounces or 113 grams or about 16 storebought cookies)
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon table salt
Pinch of white pepper, especially if your gingersnaps aren’t particularly snappish
1/2 cup (4 ounces or 113 grams or 1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled

Filling
2 pounds (about 4 to 5) large ripe pears (I used Anjou, suggested in the original recipe) peeled, halved, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 1/2 cups (6 ounces or 170 grams) fresh cranberries
1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
2 tablespoons (14 grams) cornstarch

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Stir together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, gingersnap crumbs, ginger and salt. Stir in the melted butter until large crumbs form.

In a 1 1/2 to 2 quart baking dish, mix the pears, cranberries, lemon juice, lemon zest and vanilla. In a small bowl, whisk the sugar and cornstarch together then toss it with the fruit mixture in the pan. Sure, you could do this in a bowl but then you’d also have to wash that bowl and hooray for fewer dishes.

Sprinkle the gingersnap crumble over the fruit. Set the crumble on a foil-lined baking sheet (in a 2 quart dish, mine didn’t come close to bubbling over but I see no reason to risk it) and bake it for about 45 minutes, until the crumble is a shade darker and you see juices bubbling through the crumbs. See how long you can wait before digging in.

- Happy Holidays

My friend recently gave me a gift, a gift that really does keep on giving and I decided I would share this idea on my blog. I have always been a big advocate for ‘charity’ gifts so this one really made an impact on me. I had never heard of Kiva before; it is a non-profit organization which allows people to lend funds through micro loans to help alleviate poverty. By way of a worldwide network of these micro-lending institutions, Kiva lets individuals donate funds to endless causes creating opportunities around the world.

100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes directly towards funding loans; Kiva does not take a cut. Kiva also does not charge interest to the Field Partners, who administer the loans. Once the loans are paid back you can even re-lend the money! So the gift really DOES keep on giving!

So, my friend stayed with me for about 2 weeks in between new housing and I always try to be the best hostess when it comes to my house guests. We had a great time doing dinners, talking, hanging out watching the favorite shows… (Playing Dexter catch up!) And here is how he repaid me:

I redeemed my gift by lending to a woman named Mary from Kenya, here is her story…

Mary is 37 years old, married and has two children in school. To earn a living, she sells natural medicine and health products. She has been in the business for four years and has employed one person. Even though she runs her business in a very competitive environment, she has retained her business because of her good customer care. Mary hopes to expand her business into wholesale in five years. She needs a loan of 80, 000 Kenya shillings to add stock of medicine. (Mary’s Story)

In a few short days, the loan had been fully funded, I was so happy for this woman! And I really felt I made a small difference for someone who needed a little help. The causes are endless so if you choose to give, you can direct the funds to causes that mean the most to you.

I think next year I may do some X-mas shopping on Kiva, so I want to thank my friend for opening my eyes to this awesome opportunity and I encourage all to try it out! Feel free to use this link to get started: KIVA INVITATION

This year, instead of the traditional Halloween party, I decided to host a Murder Mystery Dinner! It has been something I have wanted to do for a long time but have just never gotten around to it! So procrastination time was up, and the murder began! I found these awesome party kits at My Mystery Party and the options were endless! I did a little narrowing down, and with the help of some of my friends we decided to do the “The Assassination at the Annual Superhero Assembly”.

I’ll just let the photos tell you how it went :)

I highly recommend you plan a party, the kit comes all ready to go, full with instructions, games, menu suggestions, character clues, it is pretty much print and go. I can’t wait for a repeat event! How often do you get to see your friends go wild with costumes? Plus, you can always reuse the costumes for another Halloween, at least that’s what I’ll probably do…

Another tip… assign the “required” characters to the most outgoing people. The guests don’t have to know this, but those are generally the characters that have the most protagonism.

I really loved playing hostess (as usual) and Electra the superhero and leader of the Justice Confederation (…hahaha). There are plenty of other game options from 1920′s, 50′s, 70′s disco, 80′s – might do that one next time – or celebrity edition, they are really endless.

So happy partygoing & Happy Halloween!

If anyone has needed dating advice it has been me. So in efforts to share some great tips (from others), take my own advice, and actually blog, (I’ve been laaaaameo about it) here are a few words from the wise. Ladies enjoy!

Think your Mr. Next has the potential to be Mr. Right? Before you leap without looking, take an honest inventory. See how many of the following five essential traits he possesses.

Dating Trait #1: He listens to you

The best way to know if Mr. Next is interested in (and worthyof) being a candidate for Mr. Right? He listens to you. You’ll know he’s listening when he shows genuine concern, consistently remembers things you’ve told him (your birthday, favorite food, best friend’s name, etc.), and offers emotional support in honest and thoughtful ways.

Dating Trait #2: He connects with you easily

We’ve all been in those relationships that take W-O-R-K (and suck the life force out of us in the process). When a relationship works on its own, it feels effortless, easy, and fluid. You don’t have to force anything, forgive anyone, or turn a blind eye to red flags or gut-twisters. Instead, you communicate and collaborate with comfort, compatibility, and undeniable chemistry. If and when you experience this kind of interaction, you are on to something really special.

Dating Trait #3: He wants the real you

So often, women feel the need to sacrifice some part of themselves to make a relationship work. In the right relationship, there’s no need. You don’t have to hide, tone down, or apologize for any aspect of you or your fabulous life. With the right partner, you’re not only able to be yourself, but you’re better able to be the best version of your most authentic self — no compromises needed.

Dating Trait #4: He’s trustworthy

A relationship without trust is doomed from the start. A relationship without trust is doomed from the start. But a relationship with abundant trust? A fabulous foundation for real and lasting love! Built over time, trust is based on the simple belief system that your partner has your best interests at heart and will never intentionally hurt you (and vice versa). If and when you discover that Mr. Next is 100 percent trustworthy, you’ll have no trouble giving your heart to him. In return, he’ll most likely give you his heart and pave the way for a lasting, loving relationship to unfold.

Dating Trait #5: He enriches your life

In the wrong relationship, your partner tears you to emotional shreds, brings you down, and in general drains your energy. In the right relationship, he enriches your life, inspires you to be your best self, and brings a sense of peace and possibility to you. You’ll know Mr. Next is enriching your life if and when he encourages and supports you professionally, personally, and spiritually. And when he does, he may just be Mr. Right!

Does your Mr. Next possess all five qualities? If so, congratulations! You have done your homework, chosen wisely, and are now well positioned for relationship success. If not, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back into the dating pool with a clearer understanding of who you want to date. Remember, finding your life partner isn’t always easy, but by being clear, honoring yourself, and acting accordingly, you’ll cut down on wasted time with Mr. Wrong and Mr. Next, and ultimately make room for Mr. Right.

Now time to put it into action! Wish me LUCK…

I would consider myself a “tough to please” TV viewer, but there is one show that doesn’t even have to try to get my attention. Finally the highly anticipated (waiting was killing me) fourth season of Sons of Anarchy is underway! The guys are fresh out of prison, Jax is a full on dad now AND has chopped his golden locks (I am a little disappointed about this) and there is a new cop in town trying to get rid of their “cuts”! Only a biker’s most important gear – how could they ban that!? Sounds like a pretty great set-up so far.

And if the simply fantastic cast (Charlie Hunnam & Katey Sagal – to name a few), engaging characters and mysterious life of a motorcycle club doesn’t draw you in, try a full and in effect Biker Wedding where the groom (Opie) vows to his bride: “I’ll treat you as good as my leather and ride you as much as my Harley”. But it only gets better, just as you think an easy breezy first episode starts wrapping up, revenge strikes wiping out some major competition rolling right into an inmate murder that will make you gasp! I actually did have to cover my eyes.

This show just gets me every time. Maybe because I secretly would love to know what it’s like to be an ‘old lady’ or I somehow want to be part of a biker family, something about their grit appeals to me… I know shocker! I could probably have my chance right in town if I really wanted! They do exist so I’ve seen; I actually came across one in my own city of Phoenix – Set Free Soldiers: Till Death (below)

OK, maybe I’m getting a little carried away… Regardless, I am definitely looking forward to this season, Jax making some big decisions now that he has a real family, and the future of SAMCRO. How will they make it with the new force in town? I guess we will just have to watch and see! I am just glad to have some “quality” television to look forward to over the next couple of months. Thank you Kurt Sutter, you genius. Now get back on twitter! God, how I love this show.

OK, so it’s going to take me some time to ramp up to this blogging ordeal, but I am determined to remember all the fantastical and fun things that run through my mind everyday just so I can share them with my followers!

One thing that jogged my now 30-year old memory was a tiny little reference on Showtime’s Weeds to the “Trapper Keeper”. More specifically, guest star Martin Short refers to it as the “Trapper Keeper of Broken Dreams”. Not quite the reference I will be using here.

First off, who did not have one of these if you lived in the 80′s!? It was pretty much the most important identifying object of my existence as an elementary school kid. I am almost positive I had this exact one… It was actually a pretty awesome invention, it had three rings inside, a flap to keep everything contained, and it was never too hefty so you could carry it around wherever you liked. (Not that we had many papers back in the elementary school days)

Anyway, these things were great! Came in awesome colors, patterns, there was even the “Lisa Frank” variety. Oh, how I loved Lisa Frank. …I would always wonder what her house looked like… tangent … OK, so the Trapper Keeper was really truly a dream come true school supply.

Now as my memory was jogged I couldn’t resist the opportunity to just go ahead and Google the “Trapper Keeper” to see if they had that exact model that I used to own… and they did! (picture right) happy to see that some one has still retained one for their own collection. Pretty sure my mom threw mine away. But! To my surprise, the Trapper Keeper line still exists! You can still purchase your very own Trapper Keeper from Mead, the original manufacturer (http://www.meadonline.com/Trapper/Home.aspx) – the key to getting all your stuff organized.

This is truly exciting to me. Although sadly they do not seem to have the same wonderful, colorful, characterized varieties of the good old 80′s, they have kept the line alive but stuck with “Trapper” as the tag. Ah it was nice to reminisce. So why did Martin Short’s character “Steward Havens” call it his Trapper Keeper of Broken Dreams? Well he uses his Trapper Keeper as a place to record the compendium of sob-stories from all of his loony clients, in this case Nancy Botwin. Havens gets roped into helping Nancy’s custody case after hearing her compelling fabrication of Esteban’s death, which apparently involves the Aryans, broken dominoes, and a mystery box. (Sounds like great scoop to keep hidden in a Trapper) Well, glad to see he is getting good use out of it.

So I guess I should say, thank you Weeds for really using a 5 second blurb to send me on a trip down memory lane. I could go on forever with the whole “child of the 80′s” thing, but for now I would like to just keep it short and say, thanks to the Trapper Keeper for all the good times!

I’ve done it! I’ve created my own blog. This has been a long time coming so I just had to leave my first note. Rest assured, there will be many more interesting additions to come, but I am excited to say I will finally have my own BLOG!

I kind of think there is no more appropriate song than this good old Rolling Stones jam to “Start Me Up”! So here I go… Gotta love a Mick Jagger dance party.
